Here's what I recommend every couple look for.

1. Start With Your Guest Count

Before falling head-over-heels for a venue, make sure it can comfortably accommodate your guest list.

Pay attention to the venue's maximum capacity, but don't stop there.

A venue that technically holds 150 guests may feel very different with 150 people, a dance floor, a DJ or band, a bar, a buffet, a sweetheart table, and room for guests to move around comfortably.

Think about how you want your reception to feel. Do you want a packed, energetic dance floor? Plenty of space between tables? A large cocktail hour? A lounge area? A separate space for the ceremony?

Your guest count affects much more than your seating chart.

2. Ask About the Rain Plan

If you're planning a wedding in North Carolina, your rain plan should be more than, "We'll figure it out if it rains."

Ask the venue exactly what happens if the weather doesn't cooperate. Is there an indoor ceremony option? Can cocktail hour move inside? Is there enough covered space for guests? Who makes the final weather call? When does the venue need to know about the change?

And perhaps most importantly: Do you actually like the backup space?

Your rain plan should be a plan you're comfortable using, not a space you hope you never have to see.

3. Look Closely at the Getting-Ready Spaces

Getting-ready rooms can make a surprisingly big difference in your wedding day experience.

Look at the size, natural light, mirrors, outlets, seating, bathrooms, and overall comfort of the space. If you're getting ready with your wedding party, make sure there's enough room for everyone without feeling cramped.

And ask when you can access the space. A gorgeous bridal suite doesn't help much if you can't get into it until an hour before your ceremony.

Ask about required or preferred vendors before signing your contract. This can include:

9. Think About the Guest Experience

When you tour a venue, it's easy to focus on what you see. Try walking through the day from your guests' perspective.

These little details can have a huge impact on how effortless your wedding feels.

10. Look Beyond the Pretty Pictures

Pinterest and Instagram are wonderful for inspiration, but remember that you're seeing the finished product.

A venue can look completely different depending on the season, lighting, guest count, layout, rentals, florals, and overall design.

When touring a Raleigh wedding venue, try to picture your wedding there. Where will your ceremony take place? Where will guests eat? Where will you dance? Where will your photographer take portraits? Where will vendors load in?

Those details matter.
